Since “mindfulness” can only take place in situations which are new or require effort to master, older people who accept their “deteriorated” status may indeed be reduced to mindlessness; given no opportunities for new and challenging experience, they sink into brain-numbing passivity.

Endurance Activities

Endurance activities, also known as aerobic activities, increase both breathing and heart rate.  These activities can keep you healthy, improve fitness, and help you do the tasks you need to do every day.  These activities can also improve the health of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system.   They have been shown to delay or prevent many common diseases in older adults like diabetes, colon and breast cancers, and heart disease.  Examples of endurance activities include:

  • Brisk walking
  • Dancing
  • Yard work
  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Climbing stairs!

Each breath of air we inhale contacts surface areas in the lungs roughly the size of a tennis court!

Advancing age increases the risk for lung infections, chronically low oxygen levels, decreased ability to exercise, abnormal breathing patterns, and diseases caused by tobacco damage.

What can you do?

- Drink plenty of water and eat a well-balanced diet.

- Avoid smoking.

- Exercise & overall fitness can improve breathing capacity.

- Consciously try to increase deep breathing.

Love this!!!  Totally fills you with holiday cheer!!!

Owls have been popping up everywhere lately, from the “new planking” to random trivia via email.  While google may be slowly diminishing our ability to memorize random facts, it’s still important to flex those mental muscles!  Much like everything else; if we don’t use it, it’s more likely we will lose it.
Here’s a few suggestions to keep your brain active:
Play games!
Stay curious & involved
Garden (Not recommended when it’s 103 degrees outside.)
Read, write, work puzzles
Try memory exercises
Attend lectures & plays
Enroll in adult education courses
